Ayurveda & Understanding Human Physiology
Ayurveda helps understand body type of each individual which is unique. In Modern medicine this co-relates to the genetic constitution of an individual. Ayurveda believes that every individual is made of 5 elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Space; which manifest themselves in the human physiology as the three Doshas.
Vata (Space+Air), Pitta (Fire+Water), and Kapha (Earth+Water).
What is Ayurveda ?
The term Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word. "Ayur" means lifespan and "ved" means science, so Ayurveda is literally the Science of Life and Longevity, which defines lifespan as a balanced union of body, senses, mind, and consciousness.
How does Ayurveda treat?
Ayurveda skilfully uses appropriate foods, herbs, lifestyle, and routine in order to create and maintain a balance (Swa-stha) between Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas. All these are part of the holistic definition of a healthy individual.
Ayurveda & Modern Medicine ?
"As a sub-specialist, I was trained to look at joint function and treat my patients. In reality this always perplexed me cause joint function and quality of life are very much dependent on your mind- body type and environment."
Ayurveda treats the individual as a whole, it focuses on the root cause, from subtlest (cellular) to the gross level. It promotes prevention of disease and maintenance of health and complements modern medicine very well.
